I just installed WordPress 2.9.2 on Dreamhost using their advanced one-click install.

When I log into the Dashboard, the menu down the left side of the screen includes a lot less stuff than on my dreamhost.com website. The themes also seem less flexible. For example, dreamhost.com has a menu item Themes/Header but the Header option does not show up under Themes on my Dreamhost site.

How can I make the Dashboard menu on Dreamhost have the richness of the Dashboard menu on dreamhost.com

  • There should be no difference if you have everything the same. If you have another wordpress theme or other plugins for example, yes then it will be different.

I installed the Vigilance theme. The same Vigilance theme running on wordpress.com allows me to change the header via Themes/Header. However, on my Dreamhost deployment of WP 2.9.2 the Header menu item is missing from the Themes menu. There are several other things missing from the Dashboard menu that runs down the left side of the screen.

I believe WordPress.com sometimes adds some functionality to themes they offer to support changing header images, etc. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

So this would mean it’s possible that your theme does not actually support that functionality and it would not be available on a self-install of WordPress.

However, there are plenty of themes out there that do support this if you would like to try finding another theme for your site.

You can get the wordpress.COM version of that theme here
    https://svn.automattic.com/wpcom-themes

Note if you subsequently upgrade automatically, you will get the extend version of that theme installed.

Thank you for these useful suggestions. I’m obviously new to WordPress.

    Regarding https://svn.automattic.com/wpcom-themes:
From the WP 2.9.2 Dashboard, if I select Install Themes, it wants a theme in .zip format. The themes at https://svn.automattic.com/wpcom-themes are just a bunch of files. Do I have to download them and zip them up myself, or is there an easier way to install a theme directly from there?

Download them using an SVN client, then upload them with your FTP and use it.

Success! I was able to use svn to download the vigilance theme from https://svn.automattic.com/wpcom-themes
and then install it using scp.

Thank you for the excellent advice!

    No problem, your welcome ??
