• Hi Guys,

I am stuck in between our developers and SEO guys. Can you please help me out here with the best practice.

We required to update our entire website to a new theme, new features, PHP, ubuntu server, and bootstrap version. Our developer are keen to do an entire new setup of the website (clean CSS, JS and WP plugins) and make it more light weighted WP site.

But our SEO guys are so against of this step and they are asking to do changes to the current site without moving to completely new site, saying that, we might loose SEO rankings.

Can someone help me here? Are there any white papers or documents around this point ?

    Manny thanks in advance.

    Thank you

    Ravi Denawaka

  • SEO is built on Domain name and URLs. If they are going to stay the same then it doesn’t matter where or how they are hosted. Ask your SEO people to justify why they are against creating a new site even though the Domain name and URLs will stay the same–presuming that is the case.

Thank you for the feedback. This is my understanding as well. But as you know some SEO consultants doesn’t tell the so called “their strategy in SEO”. All the say “we might loose rankings”. Its annoying when they don’t point out exactly this is the issue.

My understanding was if we use a SEO tool and make sure all current backlinks are pointing to the new website pages then there will be no issues.

Please correct me if I am wrong

You need to be correct & accurate with your wording for a proper answer.

    1. Is the site being redesigned with a new theme and new software but the Domain name & URLs will remain the same?

    2. Something different than above?

    Also,

My understanding was if we use a SEO tool and make sure all current backlinks are pointing to the new website pages then there will be no issues.

New web pages are not the same as new URLs.

I am being very specific because SEO is an area that is not always correctly understood. If you have good SERP’s then you want to keep them. Backlinks can be redirected no matter what happens to your site without any loss of SEO.

New site will have improved features and UI will be improved. Its not a complete revamp of the entire pages. Also we are using old bootstrap versions and PHP versions. Need to upgrade those. CSS & JS used are also need to improve in order to speed up the loading.

Without you answering my questions about Domain name and URLs, there is nothing further I can add. Sorry.
