Per usual, posting about it means I immediately found the answer: https://intercom.help/elegantthemes/en/articles/2307418-blog-module-doesn-t-show-post-images-when-jetpack-plugin-is-active

The pagination uses AJAX to load the previous/next pages so the lazy load script doesn’t get triggered.

But it’s not working for me.

    Hello, there.

Layout, design, or any custom code is definitely outside the scope of our support since we only develop the Jetpack plugin itself, not WordPress at large. Because of that, we can only support Jetpack features (Like Lazy Load) “out of the box” in the way it’s intended to work – in this case, on page load rather than an AJAX call.

The best options for help on that would be Elegant Themes support or that author (Eduard) directly to see what might be different about how your site is set up.

You may also want to give it a shot in the production site to see if behavior is different, since Jetpack can connect to staging and live sites differently, depending on your settings.

So, we wouldn’t be able to help you with that directly, but I hope this points you in the right direction!
