    Hi guys,

I wasn’t sure whether to post this in the Site Kit or the official AMP plugin support threads but I know that @jamesosborne diligently checks both so, hopefully, I’ll be pointed in the right direction…

So, we previously used the AMP plugin in Reader mode with a quite old Genesis/Studiopress theme. We updated our theme to the newer Navigation Pro theme at the weekend and changed from Reader mode to Standard mode since the new theme is supposed to be completely AMP compatible.

The site looks good and everything seems to be working well…except for Adsense auto ads.

Since the cache has started to clear, the number of Adsense auto ads has dwindled hour by hour until none at all are currently showing.

I’ve tried clearing cache, disabling/re-enabling plugins, disabling re-enabling auto ads in Adsense – but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas what might have gone wrong and what I can do to troubleshoot?

    Many thanks for the help!

    Barry

    Hi Barry,

Thanks for reaching out. That is indeed strange that the amount of ads served has decreased. So we can first of all check your AdSense account status please share your Site Health information here or privately via this form. Note that this is something you can check yourself by logging into your AdSense account or by checking the Site Kit related information while copying your Site Health information to the clipboard before sharing (Tools > Site Health > info > AdSense Account Status). While we’re unable to access your AdSense account this will provide an indicator if there are issues to be addressed at AdSense level.

As I can see no ads on the URLs I checked on your site there could be other issues not limited to your AdSense account or site status. I noticed some AMP validation errors, with references to possibly WP Fastest Cache. Have you tried to suppress this plugin from running on AMP URLs? You’ll find the option with the AMP plugin configurations.

Another thing you can check is to manually insert a single ad unit on your site – an AMP valid ad unit. That’s a good way to test whether there is something blocking ads. If you’re unsure how to place a single ad unit let me know, you’ll get your ad unit code (AMP version) from within your AdSense account. You can then paste that in between your content, into a widget or using a plugin.

One other check you can perform is temporarily switch to transitional mode on your site, we can then see if ads appear on the non AMP version of your content.

Let me know on the above anyway, in particular your Site Health information.

    Hi @jamesosborne

Many thanks for your help again ??

I’ve just shared our Site Health info via the form – and all looks to be good with Adsense, both in Site Health and in our Adsense account too. Our site is marked as ready, and in Ads > Overview > ‘Let Google Place Ads For You’ section it says that AMP is on, Auto Ads are on and Page Exclusions are 0.

However, if I click ‘Edit’ to get to the ‘Ad Settings Preview | turkeysforlife.com’ page, it says 0 in-page ads with a red warning button saying ‘Get Code’ next to it. There’s also an info bar above saying ‘Looks like you’ve got an AMP site. Make sure that you’re using Auto ads for AMP.’

So it seems like everything is good, except that the snippet isn’t being inserted, or isn’t being inserted correctly, at least.

I’ll try your other suggestions throughout the day and update here soon. Although, to suppress WP Fastest Cache on AMP pages on an all-AMP site would leave us with no caching at all, right?

    Many thanks again!

Thanks for sharing. Likewise I don’t see anything that stands out from checking your Site Health information which you kindly provided. But please do let me know once you’ve placed single ad units and I’d be happy to check. If using a plugin such as Advanced Ads or Ad Inserter you can also ensure the single ad units appear on various URLs, posts or content types.

You are correct, it would leave you with no page caching. This is a temporary check to see if there are configurations such as minification or combining of assets are impacting ads in your case, or do the validator errors that appear on your AMP URLs at present exist. It also looks like you’re using WP Optimize so there may be conflicting caching features impacting your site.

    Great, thanks James.

Just to let you know what I’ve been up to so far…

I suppressed the WP Fastest Cache plugin in the AMP settings – no different
There were a few other plugins showing errors there too, so I suppressed all of those too – still no different

One of those plugins with errors was the ‘Content Views’ plugin which we use on our Turkish Recipes page. Since the plugin was suppressed in AMP I changed that page to be a non-AMP version – and ads started showing up quite quickly. So I’m guessing that means it’s a problem just with Site Kit getting the snippet live on the AMP version, for some reason.

I’ve fixed lots of AMP validation errors – most were code for Amazon Native Ads and Mailchimp Popup form (I’ve removed those completely for now, to rule them in or out)

I’ve added a manual AMP unit as a sidebar widget. The sidebar isn’t sitewide but you should be able to see it on the homepage (for now) and it appears to be serving ads without any problem.

I haven’t tried changing to transitional mode yet, since it seems like we are proving that the problem is only on our AMP version, but I can try that tomorrow if you think it might help?

Once again, thanks so much as I wouldn’t be able to troubleshoot so easily without your help.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the update. I didn’t check the “Content Views” plugin although I can certainly do so if you believe there may be something block ads or ad code as placed via Site Kit.

I can also see the single ad unit appearing fine on your sidebar. I see still see some validation errors although I don’t think these would be the cause of Auto ads for AMP ads not appearing. Can you confirm that you have Auto ads enabled at AdSense level for this particular domain?

    (@turkeysforlife)

I doubt the Content Views plugin can be the issue tbh – and I could probably find alternative solutions to do the same job, if it was.

Which validation errors can you still see? When I view our site, I can see in the top nav bar that the AMP plugin has a yellow exclamation mark with 3 issues. But, if I click that, it says that all issues are resolved.

Likewise, if I click the ‘Error Index’ from the WP sidebar, the page says ‘No validation errors found’. What can you see that I can’t, I wonder?

And, yes, I can confirm that Auto ads are enabled at Adsense level for the domain.

    Another update…

I’ve just tried switching to Transitional and ads have started to appear again on non-amp pages but not on AMP versions (except for the manual ad in the sidebar)

Thanks for sharing your experience on this. As I can see the Auto ads for AMP snippet on your site I’m afraid I don’t have any further insights on why there are no such ads appearing. Usually when this occurred previous this was as a result of users recently adopting AMP. In your case, along with in cases where I’ve been testing over the last few days this may require some further insights from the AMP team. I’ll keep this support topic open while reaching out and keeping you updated here. I may have to create a GitHub issue on the AMP repository, at which point I’ll also keep you informed.

Just to keep you updated on this I’ve spoken with the team and if ads are not appearing as expected you’ll need to reach out to the official support via the AdSense Help Center. I wasn’t able to determine any bug or issue to be address, and from checking both your AMP and non AMP URLs today I don’t see much ads placed in either, including on long posts (example).

What you can also check is your Ad Load settings and the Ad Formats enabled. Note that these Auto Ads settings only apply to non AMP URLs.

Sorry I can’t be of more assistance on this.

    Hi James,

Thanks for getting back to me anyway. Interestingly, ads did start to appear on AMP pages around about last weekend – but they started to dwindle again yesterday and have dried up completely again today. No idea why because nothing much has changed on our side.

I can see 5 ads on the non-AMP version of the long post you linked to – and we haven’t had a noticeable drop in impressions on non-AMP URLs. So at least with transitional mode we are earning some Adsense revenue, unlike when we were in standard mode. Shame, though, as I’d love to get everything working in standard mode ??

If it doesn’t resolve in the next few days I’ll reach out to official support as per your suggestion.

Thanks again – and have a great weekend!

I understand the frustration. Some users did have more luck while awaiting Auto ads for AMP by implementing single ad units and using them across their site, in multiple positions using Ad Inserter or Advanced Ads.

And you also, have a great weekend.
