    Hello,
I’m using Hummingbird free version, sometimes I get the attached error. It says:
“It seems that we are having problems in our servers. Asset optimization will be turned off for xx minutes. cURL error 28: Operation timed out after 150001 milliseconds with 0 bytes received.”
I noticed that xx minutes is 120 and counting down. When it reaches to “0” I can use asset optimization again. during this period there is no assets when I re-check files. (0 asset found)
And I also suspect that it may be a recurring problem. (specific or random time intervals)
I couldn’t understand this problem, I searched here and also Internet, changed some timeout parameters. But no result.
I wanna see my blog (https://nasilyahu.com) (in Turkish) to pass core web vital parameters ??
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi @nasilyahu

    I hope you’re well today!

Given that this is the free version and it doesn’t use our CDN, there’s no API connection performed and such cURL errors are often related to one of two things:

    – either it’s a conflict with other plugin
    – or it’s an issue with server resource.

If you go to “Tools -> Site Health” page in your site’s back-end, does it report any (most likely, they’d be similar) issue with cURL and/or does it mention anything about “loopback” issues in “Status” tab?

Could you also try temporarily disabling CloudFlare’s “under attack” mode and it’s Rocket Loader, then clear all caches and see if the issue with Asset Optimization is gone then?

Also – are you using any other JS/CSS optimization and/or caching plugins on site at the same time?

    Kind regards,
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
Thank you for your prompt response and apologise for being late.
I checked the Site Healts and there are no cURL and/or loopback issues.
I don’t use CloudFlare and Rocket Loader so couldn’t do anything about them.
Actually I’ve used other JS/CSS optimization and caching plugins before, but there is only Hummingbird running at the moment.
Is there anything else that I can do to resolve the problem?

In addition, I’ve opened a ticket to my hosting provider whether it is related with the server issue.
I hope the problem is solved.
Thank you again for your help,

    Kind Regards,

    Hi @nasilyahu

    Thanks for response!

First of all, I’m terribly sorry – I made a mistake and actually didn’t even visit your site. I just realized that I clicked in a link that you put in “I need help with…” field and didn’t realize I’m not checking your site but visiting upload page where you shared screenshot. Instead I head over right to browser console and that’s where I got the idea of CloudFlare and RocketLoader.

Once again, I apologize for this silly mistake!

Getting back to the case. I know checked correct site and noticed some errors related to WP Popular Posts plugin in browser console. It actually seems that they are there because of optimization rather than causing optimization issues but that pointed my attention to something else: it seems that there might be something going on in background that might be causing Asset Optimization to “keep trying to optimize” assets “over and over again”.

Could you then check two more things, please?

    1. at the moments when Asset Optimization “unlocks” and you can access its settings in “Manual” mode – are there little “spinning wheel” icons next to files there all the time or they only show up and go away pretty soon?

    2. if you install free WP Crontrol plugin, you’ll be able to check cron events on “Tools -> Cron Events” page in site’s back-end; take a look there please and let us know if there are any “stuck”/overdue events listed there;

Let us also know if your host shares any feedback on the issue, as this might be helpful.

    Kind regards,
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
First off all, I want to thank you again for all of your support and assistance.
Actually during the studies wp popular posts were disappered sometimes, but when i disabled and enabled it or change HB settings it worked. In general, I saw that wp Popular post disappered.
But for now it works properly. ??

I try to explain what is my asset optimization configuration rigt now:
I’m using asset optimization in manual mode right now. At first i used it in automatic mode. Then re-check files, then move to manual mode.
I did not untouch any css files for which compression and combine options are enabled by automatic mode. But I disabled compression only for 1 or 2 css files, cause HB says that this file has already compressed.

And according to the output of the Google PSI, I only set up some css files as inline. Also I didn’t touch any files for “Move to footer”. All of them are unchecked for “move to footer” option.

On the other hand, I let alone all js files for combine and compress options as set up by automatic mode already. I used “move to footer” option for some of js files only. I did not use “force loading of this ile after the page has rendered”. I kept them as default.

As a result PSI score improved, but still LCP score is bigger than 2,5s in general.

These are my answers for your questions:
    1) Yes, I can see that spinning wheel icon for some of css and js files. I listed them below:

    Css Files:
    query-monitor – query-monitor.css
    googlesitekit-adminbar-css – adminbar.css

    JS Files:
    query monitor – query monitor.js
    googlesitekit-runtime – runtime.11204cf5d95ff56353f0.js
    googlesitekit-i18n – googlesitekit-i18n.js

    2) I’ve installed WP Crontrol plugin, checked tools-cron events tab, but I’m not sure is there any stuck/overdue events. Therefore, I’m sharing the links of the screenshots for “Events with no action”, “WordPress Core events”, and “Custom Events”.

https://easyupload.io/grersh – Events with no action
    https://easyupload.io/0dbv1f – WordPress Core events
    https://easyupload.io/vytpvj – Custom Events

Thank you again for all your support,
    Kind regards,

    Hi @nasilyahu,

Thanks for explaining further and for sharing screenshots. The configuration mentioned in Asset Optimization(AO) page sounds good and the compress, combine, move to footer etc settings should be causing an issue in general.

I checked the provided screenshots for the Cron but it looks fine, I don’t see any issues with crons related to Hummingbird.

There could also be a possibility for such an error to occur within the server. Could we know whether the website uses any security plugin? or if your server has any firewall enabled?

Could you also check the following article and the points listed and please try to rule out the possibilities listed:
    https://docs.presscustomizr.com/article/326-how-to-fix-a-curl-error-28-connection-timed-out-in-wordpress

Please do let us know how that goes. Have a nice day ahead.

    Hello Nithin,
First of all I’m very sorry for late reply.
Thank you for your explanations about my Asset Optimization settings.
I’m not using any security plugin, and no firewall enabled.
Also I asked my hosting provider those questions which you send in that related link.
They replied that there is nothing to do, no access rule, everything is ok.

By the way, I didn’t get an error last 2-3 days, because there is no change about my settings. I hope I won’t get the error again.

I want to focus on core web vitals to improve my lcp parameter.
    Thank you,

    Best Regards.
