• I have used WP for years, now. Have 3 blogs set up. BUT, I keep getting notificalion emails as to “New User Regs”, and after repeated research, I CANNPOT figure out what that really means, or what someone did to become one! Once upon a time I used MT, and almost everything was “spam”, so I always go and DELETE the new users (Most are from .ru) So please, help an very naive WPer. Am I cutting off RSS hookups or genuine readers or??? evildoers?

Enable a captcha plugin or something, so only human users will be able to register on your blogs.

About 90% of all captchas can be broken by scripts.

@esmi Nice information. What’s good to use, then?

If it’s comment spam, I’d suggest one of specific comment spam plugins. I prefer Akismet myself but there are others. With contact forms, I’d suggest a plugin that allows you to set a simple question like “What color is a blue sky?”. And then change the question regularly.

Registration are a bit trickier. Ideally, using the same approach as a contact form might help but I’ve not looked to see if there are any plugins that can add this functionality. Personally, as long as new subscribers only have subscriber status, I don’t think there’s much if a security issue. It’s more of a mild annoyance. If it was an *ru address, I might do some lookups if I had some spare time.

although not blog specific, is pretty good.
