• When I am editing a post type, only the assigned child category is listed in the right side column under the parent category. There are 2 other child categories, but for some reason they are listed further down the list and do not actually appear as child categories.

    If I do quick edit they are all listed under their parent and if I go to view all categories they are also listed under their parent.

    It is just slightly annoying enough to ask why as once I turn over this site it is not super straight forward.

    That is annoying! But I’m not seeing the same behavior on my site, so I suspect your theme or a plugin had interfered with the page query’s ordering. Try switching to Twenty Twenty-one theme and deactivating all plugins. You ought to see expected page ordering, with children indented below their parent.

    To isolate the cause of bad ordering, restore your theme, then plugins, one at a time, testing after each.
