Did not use the +-button – what are the consequences?

I have been using Polylang for years, now, and for some reason it didn’t occur to me to create my post translations via the +-button, I merely created a post and then chose a language on the language dropdown.
It seems to work fine. You can switch languages via the menu and it will show you the post in a different language. However in the list of posts they do not appear to be connected.
So how bad is it? Does it matter at all? Is there a way to connect them?
