• My site has been up for a while and I haven’t had this problem until today. When I’m working in the appearance editor, whenever I click on “update file” it gives me an Error 404 message. The template still saves and I just have to click the “back” button to get back to the editor, but it’s starting to get pretty annoying. The odd thing is that I have numerous instances of wordpress installed on this server and it does it with all of them.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

I am interested in this reply as well. I am having the same problem.

Am using the coffee break wootheme… Can’t imagine it’s a plugin because it just all of a sudden started happening… didn’t touch any plugins.

But will do both things you suggested.

Deactivated all plugins – Still had the problem.
Switched Theme to Default WP Theme – Still had the problem.

What now? Could this be a database problem?

The error message I get is as follows:

Nothing found for Wp-admin Theme-editor Php?file= Home HOSTNAME Public_html SITENAME Com Wp-content Themes Coffeebreak Reset Css&theme=Coffee+Break&a=te&scrollto=255

As I stated before, I get the same message with the default theme.

I didn’t see this thread, I’ve posted my own,

I’ve only encountered this today so I don’t know what to call it, anyway it happens when I’m inside the admin, appearance editor, when I click the “Update File” button I get redirected to my 404 page, I’ve replaced all files I have tinkered with with the original files I’ve disabled all my plugins, funny thing is it happens even to the default theme templates.

Any idea how to work with this? Thanks a bunch guys…

I would just like to add how the link looks when it goes to the 404 page

    wp-admin/theme-editor.php?file=/home/prodiga1/public_html/beta/wp-content/themes/mystique/style-red.css&theme=Mystique&a=te&scrollto=0

    Hello everyone,

I’m having a similar problem to the OP. Nothing seems to be fixing it. I thought it was perhaps WP 3.0, but I’ve since found the same problem on an older site using the last WP version before 3.0.

I notice this thread has been quiet for the last month. Did anyone here figure out how to fix this problem?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Ok, looks like no one is checking this thread any more.

Thankfully, I found the solution to my particular problem. And since I HATE it when people post their problems on a forum and then never return to share the solution once they find it, I thought I would return here in case anyone finds this forum in a google search.

In my particular scenario, I managed to figure out that the problem wasn’t anything to do with the installation of WordPress, the theme, or plugins, etc. To come to this conclusion, I set up a brand new WP installation elsewhere on my server. When this new installation still had the same problem, I knew it was most likely something to do with the server. So I emailed my host. I suggest you do the same. Here’s what my host wrote back:

“Those are security errors, meaning the server has detected a common exploit technique in what you’re posting back to the server, so its blocking this.. I think recently a update in software has made more false positives like yours so im still trying to tweak them. I’ve disabled this now on your account, give it a go now and let me know the result.”

Whatever security setting my host disabled managed to fix my problem for good. ??

I hope the above helps anyone else in a similar predicament. To retireate, in my case it had NOTHING to do with the WP installation, its version number, its theme, or plugins. It was strictly to do with some security settings on the server controlled by the host.
