• “I added a line of code to the functions.php section of the themes editor, not realizing what it would do (I was trying, incorrectly, to add a flavicon–wrong spot). Now my site is completely locked down. I can’t log in to my www.ads-software.com account or my web site–when I try either one, the only message that shows up on the page is as follows:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in D:\Hosting\[the number is here]\html\wp-content\themes\default\functions.php on line 37
Any ideas? I’m not even sure where to begin. I will remove the line of code as soon as I can access my account, but I don’t know how to get back into the account since I seem to have messed up the theme that would show my dashboard.” A previous post

I am fresh to Word?Press and have a similar problem. My message is:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in/home/taehwang/magpiestudioarts.com/wp-content/themes/barthelme/functions.php on line 7
How do I use my ftp client, to upload a fresh unedited copy of your current theme’s function.php?
Where do I get a fresh unedited copy ?

  • Where did you get the theme from in the first place? You haven’t even mentioned what theme you’re using.

    Sorry Esmi,

I am totally new to this.

I am using barthelme, one of the preloaded options I picked through the dashboard. It was working just fine until I began monkeying with it.

Download a fresh copy of the theme to your computer from https://www.ads-software.com/extend/themes/barthelme and unpack the archive file.

Then upload the functions.php file to your wp-content/themes/barthelme folder using FTP (or whatever file management application your host provides).

    Thanks!

I tried this and it still does not work. Should I delete the functions.php files on my site and try again?

I tried deleting the file and uploading the new one and it still does not work. Any other suggestions?

The entire barthelme theme has been replaced. Any clues as to why it is still not working?

post the full contents of your functions.php in here.

or in the pastebin preferably, per forum rules….

(the functions.php is a bit long)

This is the new functions.php file that was freshly downloaded yesterday: https://wordpress.pastebin.com/hAH9kRWf

I had no troubles with the theme before I started cutting and pasting code. I had been attempting to add a photo to my home page, by pasting the photo html directly into the php files. When I pasted to line 7 and uploaded the total lock out occurred.

Yesterday I went into my site files and removed the entire Barthelme theme and replaced each file with the originals.

    Thanks for helping me.

so, if you totally delete the Barthelme theme, that should set you back to the default theme when you try to get back into your site.

Did you try that at all? If that doesn’t work, your problems run deeper

Because in your original post, you also have an error code referencing the default theme…..did you mess with that too? If so, you need to upload a fresh copy of the default theme as well….

    Thread Starter melinda-rose

    (@melinda-rose)

    Yes. I totally deleted Barthelme.

I dont think I changed the default theme but I may have? Where do I find a replacement default theme? It would not hurt to replace it just in case

    https://www.ads-software.com/download/

download all of WP to your computer….if you unzip the download and go to wp-content->themes, the default theme will be in there

with the Barthelme theme totally gone, when you try to access your WP, do you get error messages?

    Thread Starter melinda-rose

    (@melinda-rose)

The Barthelme theme is not gone it has been replaced. I will try just deleting it and seeing what happens before changing the default theme.

    This is the error message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in /home/taehwang/magpiestudioarts.com/wp-content/themes/barthelme/functions.php on line 7

Yeah, I would try totally killing that theme first, get back to default.

Then we can make sure your install is still working, and everything is good.

After that, we can try reinstalling a new theme…..

Barthelme is gone now and I still get the same error message. I will change the default now and see if that fixes the prob.
