    Hi,

I recently started working on a news website which have a ton of old content indexed on Google and this is causing issues with new content indexing.

So I’m using “noindex” tag on the old content but now there are several post xml sitemaps that appear empty, clearly remnants of the old content.

How can I update the sitemaps so that only the filled up ones show up?

    Thanks

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hello @entmediatech

By default, each sub-sitemap should have a maximum limit of 1000 URLs. It looks like you have 28 post sitemaps, so is it safe to assume you’ve had closer to 28,000 published posts? Could you also let us know around how many posts you’ve set to ‘noindex’ which would then remove it from the sitemap index?

Upon checking one of the post sitemaps (like post sitemap 12), we do see that it isn’t loading any URLs.

Could you try deactivating the sitemap feature, clearing all of your caches, and then regenerating it by enabling it again and see if that helps – https://yoast.com/help/xml-sitemaps-in-the-wordpress-seo-plugin/
