How to add a separate widget area?

I also need this functionality, or something equivalent to a right-side column for widgets.

Anyone have any suggestions or advice?

Got it…

Using the “List View” of the editor, I inserted a “Columns” block just below the “Header” block. The Columns block I selected consisted of two columns, and I then dragged and dropped the existing “Query Loop” block into the left column of the new “Columns” block.

Then I populated the right column of the “Columns” block with the “Design” blocks I wanted. (I.e., “Calendar,” “Search,” et cetera.)

This effectively puts all posts in the left column of the “Columns” block and the “Design” blocks (i.e., “widgets”) in the right column.

Hi there! As a theme that’s built for the new Site Editor, Twenty Twenty-Two does not include traditional “Widget Areas”. Instead, as @harry-hobbes noted, you can use the Site Editor to add widget blocks wherever you’d like in any template. Here’s an introduction to the Site Editor in case you’re not familiar:

Also, in case it’s helpful, the theme does ship with some Block Patterns that are reminiscent of traditional sidebars or widget areas. For example, here’s a video showing how to add a left sidebar via the theme’s “Blog Posts with Left Sidebar” pattern:
