    Chronological History:
    Made universallorehealing.com with wordpress.com
    Bought universallorehealing.org domain (on wordpress.com)
Exported .com file to my pc
Bought Self Hosting package with DreamHost
On my wordpress.com admin page; changed nameservers in the universasllorehealing.org to
    DreamHost nameservers.
On WordPress.com admin Exported .com file again
Downloaded WordPress Importer Plugin (i think)
    Wordpress Run Importer
    Choose File
    Upload File and Import
Assign Authors page; andteenmac9070. Tick Download and Import file attachments
    Submit

    FAILED : “Internal Server Error”

Is this because i need to do the importing of the file through DreamHost instead?

Apologies for my naivety, this is my 1st website, let alone migrating, exporting, importing etc etc

    Let’s go step by step:

    1. Why did you buy a .org?

    2. The internal server error is in DreamHost, right?

Hello a2 i bought the .org domain so that i could promote my.com site on the search engines without having to buy the business plan. ie .org site i can use meta tag plugins.
I have learnt from a DreamHost agent that i cannot promote my .com site through another domain, but i guess i can still have my .com site of the same name live at the same time?

The internal server error was on www.ads-software.com

Why did i do that and not use DreamHost to import the .com files?
i guess i was hedging my bets that i could keep everything in wordpress. i know you said previously that i had to buy a self hosting package and one of the D.H agents made mention of setting up and temporarily migrating to a free subdomain like universallorehealing.dreamhosters.com so i could access my www.ads-software.com admin page, which although i can now do, i wonder if i’ve jumped the gun.

That’s it an odd statement from a DreamHost agent. I mean, you could just recreate the site in the new server and have a temporary domain to connect to it. Then point the DNS to your newly imported site.

    I suggest you to:

    1. Don’t make modifications to the site hosted in WordPress.com
    2. Export/Import your site to the new server (Use the new domain, no need for temporary).
    3. If the new site has issues, fix them. It shouldn’t since it is just importing the content
    4. Check if everything is ok

    Thanks for the reply a2.

I did wonder at the time, but wasn’t in a position to question.

With regards export/import. I did try twice previously to import the files from the file i successfully exported in wordpress.com. Both times when attempting to import however it came up with Internal Server Error.
If you look at my original message on this thread you will see the steps i took, which i basically followed off the wordpress.com page. link below

Am i getting this Internal Server Error because i have my nameservers pointing to DreamHost?

    Thanks

I don’t think so, you will have to take a look at the error log. Ask their tech support for help, and request the error log.

I work at DH and I took a quick look at your site. You did install the correct importer plugin ??

Looking at your error logs, the issue is that your server (which is a shared server, so it’s the lowest end any host has) timed out trying to import.

How large is the export file from WordPress.COM?

I will note that DreamHost does have help migrating a site to our servers, but in the case of WordPress.COM it’s a little different since we can’t really get in and do much.

The good news is WP.COM has a lot of documentation: https://move.wordpress.com/

If you moved the domain to DreamHost’s nameservers before you imported, it’s possible that’s why this is happening. Can you check you followed the WPCOM directions? They’re picky, I know.

    Thanks for replying guys.
The file is 668kb Not sure if that is regarded as a small or too large file. And yes i moved the domain to DH servers before i imported as i was told i had to do that so i could access the wordpress admin page – and it duly worked.
I’ll take a look at the documentation.

File has a normal size. If it were a huge file, WordPress would have let you know.

    Using the Export tool:
    https://move.wordpress.com/exportimport-content/

Choose ONLY the posts, and then try to import the file. If you still get the “The internal server error”, there might be something wrong with either the server or the WordPress installation (not WordPress)

    Success!
Didn’t have any Posts to download, only Pages, so used that option and it worked 1st time. Thank you.
However, there are a couple of anomalies that perhaps you can guide me to overcome.

Firstly, it didn’t transfer all of the Pages. 13 of 16 were successful.
One of the pages was ‘Testimonials’ of which i had just updated that page as a new Testimonial had come in. I remember you had mentioned about not editing the .com site.
It’s possible that the other pages that didn’t transfer were also edited at some point in February before i received that msg from you. How do i get around this please?

Secondly, the transfer doesn’t mirror from .com to .org. In other words the pages look different. Black type over photo instead of the original white out type. Photo’s much larger than original .com page and not centralised.
I guess i am right in saying this is because i had to use a different Theme Page?
My .com Theme was ‘Exford’ but that was not an option in .org so i used something else.
Is there a simple solution or do i need to alter and edit each page individually?

And thirdly, the universallorehealing.org site does not come up as the website page but as the standard ‘Just another WordPress site’ homepage. I’m guessing there is some kind of activation or publish box i need to tick.

    Many thanks

Update : I have all the pages successfully transferred over.

Obviously the pages are aesthetically all over the place so any advice on what i need to do to get it looking like my original page will be very much appreciated.

Is it worth changing the Theme on my .com page to a Theme that is also available on .org and then export it again, re-import it on .org into the same Theme and then hopefully it is all in place?

What a day. 2 steps forward 1 step back.
Using Elementor as my webpage builder.
Had to remove one of the images from my home page as it was full sized on the screen. Interesting how it was only one of the 5 images that blew up.
Anyway, deleted it and tried to replace it with another image but whatever i do to the image; Crop, re-size, reduce pixels etc, whenever i try to insert the image it blows up to full size on the screen again. i even tried moving one of my other current images up in replacement of the one i’d removed and that did the same thing.
Is there any way round this.

Also trying to edit my imported website on .org is very difficult. Trying to follow some of the videos on building webpages with Elementor, but not getting any response when trying to drag Elements into the widget box. Anyone have any links on how to navigate this conundrum.
Been on it all day and not getting anywhere fast.
(will post in separate topic and category in case this get’s ignored here because it’s now not relevant to the initial topic heading)
