domain mapping if the blog isn’t in the root directory

Is there a way to have individual domains using the multi site feature if the blog isn’t installed in the root? I have my blog in https://www.example.com/blog/, but the plugin I’m using (‘WordPress MU Domain Mapping’) tells me it won’t work unless my blog is installed in the root. Grrrr….
why can’t it ever be easy?
