Spam messages are showing up

Have you tried increasing the Security preference for the reCaptcha when the keys were created?

Could you try switching to v3 and increasing the “Security Preference” to “Most Secure” on the Google ReCaptcha admin page:
https://www.google.com/recaptcha/admin/

And see whether it makes any difference?

Another alternative would be to check whether switching to hCAPTCHA makes any difference or not too:
