Subscribing + F5 results in duplicate subscriber entries

when user clicks subscribe on the subscription widget, user gets confirmation email 1 – that is expected. But when user then refreshes page and clicks resend, user will get further confirmation email 2, and in subscriber database 2 users will be created, both with status “approval”. This is unfortunate, because duplicate users in subscriber database result in duplicate text in notification email (i.e. in one email, n identical notification texts are included for n identical users).
The same happens if user subscribes & activates (i.e. user status is “publish”, then choses to update subscription category (status: “update_approval”, confirmation email 1), then changes subscription category again *before* confirming the link in confirmation email 1 => user gets confirmation email 2 and duplicate user with status “approval” is created.
I noted that when “published” user re-enters user email address in subscription widget, the widget shows the text “<email address of user> : Awaiting approval”, but this check does not seem to work in the aforementioned situations.
