3.0 Network – images and themes

Last week I deleted five WP installations in favour of one 3.0 network installation with 5 “sites”. I am pleased by the result for the larger part, but some small things remain.

First, when exporting and importing, I got a problem with my images. Since the folder-structure is no longer the same, the old “uploads” folder no longer works which is a strange thing not having thought off in my opinion (not that I know at least). Since all images have ‘hardcoded’ urls in the posts, I ‘solved’ this thing by just creating bogus wp-content/uploads folders and put the images there. This does the trick, but it’s a weird patch, don’t you think?

A thing that I have not solved yet, is that I used to use one theme, but on each installation I had minor modifications, for example the exclusion of the “blog” category from the index. Now I can only use one theme for all sites and since that “blog” category does not have the same ID on each site, this no longer works. It would have been nice could I change the category ID for each site to 999 or so, but I would not know how to. Another option of course is to install five variations of the same theme, but that kind of goes against the whole idea of a “network”. Could it be an option (and possibility) have have themes installed for the network of separately per site just as with the plugins in a future version? Does anyone have a brilliant idea to solve this little thing in the current version?

A last thing is that not all plugins seem to be ‘network ready’, not even Akismet (I had to insert the API code for each site even though I have it ‘network activated’. WP-ban keeps clearing settings. Other plugins that I feared for more such as Shortstat, AskApache, AZindex and Excerpt Editor seem to work perfectly so far, as does my theme.

So far I am pleased with 3.0. A suggestion for the small thing(s) would be nice.
