Several years ago I built a lot of WP sites. This was before the block editor & all the themes could be installed with or without demo content. I used the latter as it helped me to see what I could do and it was easy enough to replace what was there with my own material.

A long illness and etc. meant I’ve been away for a fair while. I’ve just started again with a new host. I’ve been able to install WP o.k. and have tried many themes from WP directory & third parties.

I can’t make head nor tail of things now. The blocks confuse me. The themes generally seem to have no demo content that could guide me.

Some of the options are familiar but I’m having real trouble creating menus and even when there is one and I have content for it it doesn’t seem to appear.

I have tried reading written help files and things but I just can’t get my. head around how to get hold of either the classic or the block editor. I’d prefer the classic one as it is with what I have most familirity.

So, I’m stuck. If anyone can help, I’d appreciate it. Would be great if someone could suggest a them with demo material, preferably free, that I could use to get me back into things.

However, I’d appreciate any advice or help.

If I’m in the wrong place or too stupid then please just ignore or moderator please delete.

I never had problems in the past and don’t know whether I’ve got early onset Alzheimers or am just stupid. This is probably my last attempt to sort things out before I give it away and reconcile to a life wihout sites. Perhaps that is the best thing for me.

I’ll leave it there. Sorry if this is an inconvenience or sounds ridiculous to anyone. I don’t like being a nuisance.

    r.

  • With this plugin you can deactivate Gutenberg and use the Classic Editor again: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/disable-gutenberg/

Demo content is still offered by some plugins, there were never many I think. The Astra theme, for example, offers starter templates with which you can also load demo content: https://wpastra.com/starter-templates/

There is even a plugin that allows you to import demo content: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/one-click-demo-import/ – I never tried it myself.

By the way, www.ads-software.com itself has always provided test content. However, there are an enormous number of them: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Theme_Unit_Test

To make friends with Gutenberg, I would recommend watching 1-2 tutorials. This would be an example: https://raidboxes.io/en/blog/wordpress/wordpress-gutenberg-tutorial/ – after that you should appreciate Gutenberg.

    Threadi,

Many thanks for your response and advice. I have been using the tutorials and they are certainly well made. Unfortunately, although they have given me a far clearer understanding of the block concept, when it comes to applying it on my pages, I still can’t see what I expect.

No matter, I will persist and hopefully get there sooner of later. I can see how the block system could be far better than the text based one but, at present, it seems to me to be a curious mixture of both and not anything close to as intuitive as the classic editor.

Even returning to the classic editor doesn’t seem to restore it as it was so I will persevere with Gutenberg and try to hold my frustration in check. I’ve been trying for about a month now and still got nowhere.

I’ll give is another month and if I still can’t achieve anything, cast myself into the deprecated bin and go back to print.

Thanks for your kindness in offering help. I do appreciate it. Take care. Stay safe.
