Any updates regarding built-in feature to redirect users after submission?
-
Hi! I just read this post, and had a bit of a laugh:
https://contactform7.com/redirecting-to-another-url-after-submissions/ (I have no idea how old this article is)
So first – with much love, respect and thankfulness for the CF7 plugin and all it’s done over the years for webmasters—and also because CF7 is still one of the most popular plugins in the WP (open source) repository, and thus this is the place to have these discussions…
I submit the following…
… That there are as many reasons to redirect a user after filling out a form as there are steps in a user funnel. Even a ‘thank you’ page has a purpose, and a good one is designed to either promote sharing / social engagement, remind a user of what to expect next, provide a video, an upsell, etc.
So I’m a web analyst by trade, and yes Google Analytics (or other tools) can track users in different ways – but the user/visitor’s conversion journey almost always (as opposed to your “0.01% statistic” starts with one page, and ends with another. And usually form submissions are the key user actions taken by users along those conversion paths (which are again, comprised of separate pages generally). This is true of almost every website I have used.
Secondly, on the Google Analytics front – it, like most web analytics tools, are still at their heart based on page to page user journeys, and it often requires specific configurations, and even “hacks” to get all of the most useful reports out of it when you take out this default behaviour.
Therefore given the the above, why not just add an official shortcode parameter for
redirect-url
and be done with the topic? I can’t imagine why.I’ll close with a real example / use case (simple):
Step 1: The Landing Page
The user sees an offer, are presented with an “opt-in” form, and (ideally) submits the form with their name and email. They are then redirected to…Step 2: The Registration Page
They are presented with some options of products to buy (links). Clicking on an option takes them to…Step 3: The Checkout Page
This where they enter their billing/payment details into a payment form. Once completing their purchase by clicking “Submit” the user is then redirected to…Step 4: The Thankyou Page (Edit)
This has important information, maybe their order number, and perhaps a call to action to engage with the brand further (as per above notes). From what I have gathered about CF7 and its ecosystem, it could fit in Steps 1 and 3—i.e., each step where a form is found!
All in all I feel that your assumptions about what forms are used for on the web quite odd (narrow). I hope this has helped shed some light on the topic!
With kindness.
