Double pageviews are recorded for GA 4 on single page visit. Site is also using Universal Analytics simultaneously which record single page views only. Google Analytics 4 Property Setup Assistant shows that its not connected.

Hello @yogeshbeniwal thanks for reaching out. I’d be happy to have a look into this for you to see what’s going on. Could you please provide the following:

    1. Your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
    2. Did you allow Site Kit to create and place a GA4 property for you and when checking at Site Kit > Settings > Connected Services > Analytics does the Google Analytics 4 Code Snippet say ‘Inserted’?

Once I have this information I can check everything for my side to see if anything stands out and advise on next steps.

Site Health information was shared yesterday along with this topic. Can you please check.

Settings shows snippet is inserted for both Universal and GA 4.

@yogeshbeniwal Apologies, thanks for pointing that out. Looking at your setup I can see an UA and GA4 property. These properties look to have been placed through Tag Manager is that correct to your knowledge?

When running your site through the Tag Assistant I can also only see a single instance of the UA and GA4 property. Can you please also check this and confirm you see the same?

Your GA4 tag doesn’t look like it has been placed multiple times on your site as I can only see a single reference to it which the tag assistant confirms. Site Kit currently only places a GA4 snippet for you if selected to and does not currently show reporting data. This data is gathered from your Analytics account.

If you are noticing that the data is incorrect in your Analytics account then I recommend reaching out to the Analytics support center where you will find more resources and should be able to get further assistance on this if needed.

@adamdunnage Thank you for response. Both UA and GA4 snippets are directly inserted by Site kit. My query is that if you see events triggered via Tag Assistant, you will find that pageview for GA 4 property is triggered twice and hence resulting in double page views in Analytics data.

@yogeshbeniwal I can see the double pageviews you are describing. Looking further at your source code it looks like that something may have modified the Site Kit placement which could be why this is happening. This can be the result of optimizations made by plugins such as file minification.

I can see that you have several plugins currently active on your site including the Jetpack plugin. Do you currently use any of the minification settings within Jetpack? If so could you try switching those off and checking once more? You could also try temporarily deactivating the plugin and checking back on your page views.

Let me know how this goes and if you have any further questions.

As we didn’t receive a response I’ll mark this as resolved. Feel free to open a new support topic if you continue to encounter issues, or reopen this topic and we’d be happy to assist.

@adamdunnage Minification feature is not in used. On further troubleshooting identified that while enabling Universal analytics code snippets only, its sending pageviews to both Universal and GA4. That’s why when GA4 code snippets is inserted it results in double page views.

@yogeshbeniwal thanks for confirming this after further troubleshooting on your side. In this case it sounds like that you may have your universal analytics property connected to your GA4 property via the GA4 setup assistant.

You can check this by going to your Analytics account and into the admin section. From here, select your UA property and click on the GA4 Setup Assistant option. Here you will see if the property has been connected with your GA4 property. If it has then this will be why the pageviews are being tracked for both properties as they are connected.

If you wish to keep these connected then I’d recommend setting Site Kit not to place the GA4 code to your site as that will then cause the duplicate pageviews being recorded. Otherwise, you can disconnect the properties from your Analytics account and let Site Kit place both the UA and GA4 codes on your site.

Please let me know if you have any questions on the above.

@adamdunnage GA4 setup assistant shows it as Not Connected. Please note that it was connected but was disconnected before this issue was identified.

@yogeshbeniwal thanks for confirming. Do you currently only have Site Kit placing your UA code at this time so that you don’t get the duplicate pageviews?

    Thread Starter Yogesh

    (@yogeshbeniwal)

@adamdunnage There is no other plugin placing UA code at this time. This is verified by disabling Universal Analytics in Site kit, this will trigger pageviews in GA4 only once per page and no events sent to UA.

@yogeshbeniwal thanks for the information. Can I just confirm with you that if you go to Site Kit > Settings > connected services > Analytics and edit settings and toggle on the ‘Place Universal Analytics code’ and ‘Place Google Analytics 4 code’, is that when you are experiencing duplicate page views?

And if you then toggle off the ‘Place Google Analytics 4 code’ setting does this then capture a single pageview for UA and GA4. Is that correct?

    Thread Starter Yogesh

    (@yogeshbeniwal)

@adamdunnage Yes, that’s what is happening.

    (@adamdunnage)

@yogeshbeniwal Thanks for confirming. It would be interesting to know if this happens for you when placing the code snippets for both your UA and GA4 properties manually rather than using Site Kit.

Could you try temporarily stopping Site Kit from placing both codes and place these manually instead? You can get the tracking code by going to your properties in your Analytics account and going to tracking info > tracking code.

Let me know if this behaves in the same way.

@adamdunnage Thank you. GA4 code insertion is disabled for the time being. Will wait for reporting by others, in case they face same issue and resolution.
