• in the wordpress codex:
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress

    its says:

If you have customized the default or classic themes without renaming them, you should not use the automatic upgrade, as it will overwrite your changes – you should use a manual update instead.

My theme is a custom theme made by a developer, but based on the default kubrick theme, them placed in custom directory. In “Manage Themes” it says:

WordPress Default 1.6 by Michael Heilemann
The default WordPress theme based on the famous Kubrick.
All of this theme’s files are located in /themes/**my-name**.

So can I auto update safely? If not, how can I rename the theme so that I can?

    thanks in advance

  • If the theme isn’t in a folder called “default” it should be OK but I’d suggest making a backup copy just in case.
