I’m attempting to Upgrade WordPress to 6.0.1 from 5.9.3. When I look at the directions listed here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/updating-wordpress/, there is the section about File Ownership.

My understanding of that section is that WordPress determines the method it will use to upgrade/changes the files.

In the PAST, I’ve simply clicked the blue “Upgrade to…” button and it worked.

Now, it’s taking me to an FTP login screen when I expected it to upgrade itself. I do not have FTP or FTPS installed just keep the ports locked down.

What are the files I need to determine ownership on and what is the best way to determine that ownership?

Thank you for the sanity check.

  • Which file and which directory should have which permission is explained in this article: https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/changing-file-permissions/ – it is also linked under your link. Often the specific settings depend on the system itself, especially with which user the web server is running because the user needs the read and write permissions for the files and directories. We here at www.ads-software.com can’t fully answer that, apart from the above mentioned article, because we don’t know your or all other possible configurations.
