    Hi,

    We seem to have a problem with failed payments, it seems like they fail before they get to Paypal because we end up with failed orders that have this status and no order reference.

    Could not process order. Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed.

    On the orders page at the top they say
    Payment via PayPal. Customer IP: X.X.X.X
    So its like they fail before they get an order reference from paypal.

    The logs don’t seem to show anything useful.
    We are on Version 1.9.1

    I can send you log files if that would help.

    Hi @spottedpaint,

    Could not process order. with no further details suggests something went wrong on the WooCommerce side. So usually, this is not caused by a problem at PayPal, like a rejected payment.
    This would be more likely caused, for example, by caching plugins other other kinds of conflicts on the website.

    Can you reproduce this behavior?
    If yes, does the issue persist with only WooCommerce and PayPal Payments and the Storefront theme enabled?

    Hi Niklas,

    I’ve sent you a system report and some logs, with some examples.
    It seems in consistent, some customer attempt fail then the next order will be them succeeding. I’ve not included those ones in the examples.

    I’ve not managed to reproduce the failures. It seems inconsistent because all around them there are successful payments. Some people failed a few times in a row. There have been have been 20 failed orders since the 3rd of August so it seems high. 23 altoegther in August.
    There were 62 in July
    39 in June
    25 in May for comparison. So it seems to be an increasing issue.

    It would be neat to work out some kind of explanation. I can’t really switch to just storefront because its a live site.
    WP Super Caching is set to off in the plugin settings.

    Having the same issue, constantly failed orders via PayPal, some with Google Pay but mostly PayPal. No idea what is causing this but it seems a tonne of people are having this issue.

    I thought it might tie in with Paypal doing some maintenance but the only thing could see that they admitted too was some planned maintenance on the night of the 5th. Thats not actually listed on their website anymore https://www.paypal-status.com/history/production . We are in the UK. We had suffered some other issues with being unable to make a refund payment via the paypal site recently. When paypal have had issues in the past things tend to start working again later and they don’t tend to admit to anything.

    If it helps I have been having the same issue which is escalating in frequency over the last 7 days. Sometimes I get the error message “Instrument declined. The instrument presented was either declined by the processor or bank, or it can’t be used for this payment. Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed.” which I can deal with because it means the buyers CC was simply declined by the issuer. But then I also get the dreaded “Could not process order. Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed.” no log file detail nada. WTF? Also using 1.9.1 and as of late when an order does go thru the order notes show AVS consistently failing as follows: AVS: Y Address Match: N Postal Match: N

    Additionally and I hope someone can answer this for me (hope it does not sound stupid) but on failed orders I’m getting 2 exact same woo admin order failed emails back to back? I’ve checked while logged into PP and IPN is set to “disabled”. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated on any of the issues above especially the AVS issue.

    The guys at inpsyde spotted I had multiple webhooks setup, apparently more webhooks isn’t better. I removed the second webhook around lunchtime yesterday and since then the number of failed orders seems to have reduced. I’ll keep monitoring it but I didn’t have any failed orders last night.

    More is indeed not always better. When the same PayPal REST App is reused across multiple plugin instances, then the plugin may receive conflicting signals from events that occurred on a different site.

    We recommend using the onboarding wizard to connect your account because this will automatically configure a new REST App, set up webhooks, enable Vaulting, and sign you up for PayPal Card Processing, if desired.
    This process ensures the plugin is set up as needed.

    Anyway, the discussion continued in our internal support system and if anyone else is encountering a similar (or different) problem, please consider opening either your own thread here in the forums or alternatively a support request as mentioned here.
