On Sale shortcode displays products not yet on sale

Hi,
I have scheduled a few products to go on sale – one per day – and have created a page where I would like to display the one product that is on sale that day. I have tried to do this with the [sale_products] shortcode as well as the products widget for Elementor with the same result: all products that have a future sale price are being shown as well, with the sale price being displayed as though it was the regular price (no regular price, no strike-through). How can I make sure to exclude future on sale products from this? I am also happy to do this with a custom query if there’s a way.
