Hi, I tried to bulk compress in a big site having 1000+ images. I have enabled convert png to jpg (with original delete), enable webp, enabled resize of 1200*1200. Then I made a bulk compress. It worked well & converted images to webp. Then I use the tool option to delete originals. Almost all (original & scaled) are deleted; but some scaled images are still remains with their big size.

Why this is happening & how to remove them?. I think some images are not properly resized/compressed; thus not deleted.

Should I run the delete original option again?

    Hi Mr. Deb,

The tool “Delete Originals” specifically just deletes the original (non-scaled) that is left after WordPress has generated the -scaled versions. It doesn’t touch anything else. Also, the delete original option in the Convert tab only deletes the original that is left from converting either PNG to JPG. It doesn’t do anything with WebP as that is not a conversion but an additional version (you generally need to keep an original as a fallback).

    Hi, thanks for reply.

Is there any options to delete both the original & scaled images; only kept the compressed resize images??

No, sorry. You can control resize creation and optimization on the Resize tab though that may not help in this instance.

Hello, I am little confused now. Please clarify me.

    Case 1)
I tested the plugin in a fresh wp site. I have enabled auto resize 1200*1200, png to jpg, enabled webp. Then when I upload a very large resolution images; it automatically resize it to 1200* dimension, compress very well, if png then convert to jpg with compression, then make webp copy; then deleted both original + wordpress’s created upscale images automatically.

Here everything worked fine, specially deleting the original + upscale images automatically. I loved this feature ??.

    Case 2)
Now come to an old woocommerce site, which have 1000+ images, most are very large resolution size. Due to this wordpress has also automatically created the scaled images. So there are two big copy of images, original & scaled image.

Then I installed your plugin & configuring it well (resize 1200*1200, png to jpg, enabled webp). Then I made a bulk compress. Then I used the delete original option from the tools. I expect it did it’s job well. After checking, I found all originals are deleted. Very good??

But when I check the upload folder in details, I found these problems:

Problem 1– Some original images are not resized as per 1200* rule & directly converted to webp.
Problem 2– The old wordpress’s generated scaled images are not deleted.

So my question is, like case 1, why it is not happening in case 2 scenario.

Why some images are not properly resized & directly converted to webp?
Why scaled images are not deleted?

I guess you understand my problem very well now. Plz give me any solution of problem 1 & 2?

What you describe makes sense, including how things are working out.

With your case #1, EWWW is getting ahold of the images first and so the “original” is resized/overwritten before WP checks to see if it needs scaling. EWWW doesn’t have to do anything with a -scaled version because it’s been managed during upload. So, nothing is or needs to be deleted here because EWWW is able to get to it first.

With your case/problem #2, all of those -scaled already exist, which, as mentioned, aren’t touched by the delete tool. They are optimized, but aren’t deleted, which is what I think you are wanting.

For Problem #1, if the WebP or scaling the image down to 1200×1200 isn’t smaller in filesize than the original, it won’t do it (as that is the point). If you wanted to provide a sample image that is specifically not being resized or converted to WebP, we could check it manually and verify that that is what is happening.

    1) I guess regarding problem #2, I guess there is no option in EWWW to delete the old scaled images. Am I right?

Or is there any option or techniques (Ex: from your override docs) that I can delete those scaled images. They are just not being used and taking disc space.

    2) Regarding problem #1, I am giving you some sample images.

    A:
This is original image link of 5 mb, resolution is more than 4k*3k dimension. Link: https://postimg.cc/7f81Nb68

This is your webp converted version image link, size is small, but not resized as per 1200*. Link: https://postimg.cc/7Cgmg73R

    B:
This is another original image of almost 5 mb, resolution is more than 4k*3k dimension. Link: https://postimg.cc/fShs8Yp0

This is your webp converted version image link, size is small, but not resized as per 1200*. Link: https://postimg.cc/1gq5MRX2

And this is the scaled copy of that image. Link: https://postimg.cc/N9jCBFXP

    1) Yes, that is correct. There isn’t a way to delete the -scaled images from our plugin.

    2) Are you certain you had those settings applied when you uploaded those images? I just turned on WebP, added Resize limits to 1200×1200, and uploaded both images. The full-sized were both limited to 1200, depending on the dimension, and both WebPs were also limited:
