Can't acces WP admin – Your request timed out

  • I have 4 different WP sites and I cannot access the WP admin function for any of them. I instantly get the message “Your request timed out. Please retry the request”.

    Three of the domains were purchased and had many old links that appeared to be causing a high volume of 404 errors. I installed a plugin (but I can’t access it to find the name) to save the link juice. This was supposed to redirect 404 errors to the home page.

    Since then… everything was ok, then I could access the admin sites but couldn’t update one of them, then couldn’t access the admin for a few but could access the others. Now I can’t get to the admin function for any of the four sites.

    I don’t know if the plugin caused the problem or not because I didn’t install it on all four of my sites.

    How can I access wp-admin?

  • typically, the 1st thing to do would be to use ftp client or host’s file manager to rename the /plugins folder
    this will deactivate all of them and hopefully allow you to log in and test
    if it works, rename the folder back to original and activate plugins one by one until you find offender

    You helped me a little over a year ago, and now I need your help again.

    I have a similar problem in that I can’t access my admin panel. However, I think I know what the problem is.

    I updated today to version 3, everything was ok at that point and I could log in. Then I read info about updating the wp-config.php file with any new information. So I did, however I also did something really dumb. I changed the $table_prefix = ‘wp_’; line in the file and updated my backup copy by mistake (losing my original file) that line also had other info which I think was related to the database.

    Now I can’t log in. How do I fix this?

    Phew…. I searched my pc again and again because I was sure I had a previous backup somewhere, but just couldn’t remember where it was. Then late last night I remember that I had backed up that backup to disk and stored it away in a safe place.

    Found what I was looking for and fixed the $table_prefix = ‘wp_’; line back to what it was and now I can log back in again.

    Again I want to say thank you for your help last year.

    Thanks for the direction.
    When I changed the name of the plugin folder I got an error accessing the site due to the W3 Total Cache plugin not being available.

    I changed the name of the plugin folder back so it was accessible and I removed the most recent plugin that I’m guessing started the problem.

    I waited a bit and after a few hours I could access one site, then a few hours later could get on another. I have 4 sites. Over the last two days my access has been like this:
    site 1 – still cannot access wp-admin
    site 2 – is sometimes available
    site 3 – is sometimes available
    site 4 – is always available now

    Does it makes sense that it needs time to get a “clean slate?
    Do I give it a few days to see if it clears us (and then deal with the huge volume of 404 errrors) or are there additional things I need to check into now?
