• Hello,

i have wordpress blog with about 20k-25k users a day. I’m using wp 2.9.2 and premium theme “red carpet” (https://deluxethemes.com/redcarpet/).

But since almost six months I have big problem with database, which is crashing every 2-3 days. Sometimes it stays up for more days (6-10), but after few days it is always down. After my admins restart database, my blog is up again.

I have no idea what should i do? Please help me.

I’m using W3 Total Cache and Litespeed, and nothing helps.

In that case, I’d start eliminating plugins.

The quick and dirty method would be to deactivate everything but Akismet and wait for 3 days (according to your previously stated timeline). If the problem has stopped, slowly reactivate each one at 3 day intervals until you find the cause.

The slow and clean method would be to start with your least necessary plugins and begin to deactivate one every 3 days until the problem stops.

    Here are plugins, i’m using…

    Akismet
    All in One SEO Pack
    Disable Check Comment Flood
    Faster Image Insert
    Google XML Sitemaps
    Hotlink 2 Link
    Page Links To
    Popular Posts
    Post-Plugin Library
    SEO Friendly Images
    Simple Tags
    Smart Youtube
    W3 Total Cache
    WP-EMail
    WP-PageNavi
    WP-Polls
    WP Content Filter

Any idea, which can cause the problem with database?

What kind of hosting do you use, a dedicated server/VPS or shared hosting?

Yes, i have my own dedicated server…

I hope you guys can help me somehow, because this stupid problem is really frustrating.

Most likely the database engine (MySQL) needs some tweaking and you (or your server admin) need to find out why it crashes. For example, the server might run out of memory while many people visit your blog at the same time. So chances are that’s rather a server tuning issue than a WordPress problem.

SEO plugins and plugins like Popular Posts usually raise red flags for me, but that doesn’t mean that they’re necessarily the cause in this case. I can’t commit to memory the thousands of available plugins and their history of conflicts (or lack there of).

Deactivating one at a time may be the only troubleshooting option.

Edit: I see you’re on a dedicated server. In that case, this might be of use:

Before i switched to dedicated server i was on vps. My hosting company said before i joined their vps, uptime on whole server was 150 days. After they put my site on vps whole server started to crash (of course database). So i had to switch to dedicated server, because other users complained.

Now, my own dedicated server was cofigured by 3 really experienced admins, so i don’t think mysql is somehow bad configured.

I really don’t know what to do ;(

The server admins should be able to narrow down what causes the database to crash, by monitoring MySQL along with some system parameters. I’d say it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to fix the problem within WordPress.

I asked them about it and they said: its really weird but there is really nothing, which could suggest why DB is crashing ;(

Do you guys now something about “freezing mysql”? Maybe in connection to wordpress?

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

MySQL can freeze when it receives more queries than the server’s resources can handle. WordPress alone won’t cause this, but it can with the “help” of poorly coded plugins.

MySQL can “freeze” or become unresponsive and a query coming from WordPress could be responsible for it. That’s why I suggested monitoring the database, this includes logging such queries that take a long time to execute.
