I posted this in the general forum, this is probably a better place for it, sorry for the duplication.

I’ve been trying to get multi-site working on a brand new install of WP 3.0 and I can’t get it going. I’ve deleted and re-installed time and time again and I have the same problem.

I install 3.0 from a clean install, I’ve downloaded it more than once, just in case, but the problem persists. I make my changes to the wp-config, I go through the Network settings, make all necessary changes to the wp-config and .htaccess, but when I go to log in again, I cannot do so. My password doesn’t work, no matter what I do. I’ve gone through the e-mail password change, the password that gets sent to me doesn’t work. I’ve tried to fix it through pHpMyAdmin, I change it and it still doesn’t work. No matter what the password is set to, it doesn’t work. My only option to log back in is to clear my pHp database and replace the .htaccess and wp-config, which obviously clears the multisite settings.

My host confirms that they are running Apache mod_rewrite, so that’s not the problem as I initially thought it was. They say it should work just fine with multisite.

    Any ideas?

  • Have you tried clearing all browser cookies?

When you install 3.0, doesn’t it give the option, IN install, to go MultiSite? So you don’t have to change it later?

I have just finished doing another multi site install and to save me from having to look all over for the steps that I need to follow when I do my next one I have blogged it:

Setting Up Multi Sites in WordPress – Part I – The Config File
Setting Up Multi Sites in WordPress – Part II – Wildcard Subdomains
Setting Up Multi Sites in WordPress – Part III – Network Activation

Hopefully somewhere in here you will find what you may have missed and get it to work – I messed a few things on my first couple of attempts but can get it working now – Good Luck!

I didn’t clear cookies, that’s something good to try the next time through, probably this weekend. However, since it wouldn’t allow me to put in *ANY* password and have it work, no matter what the password was, I’m sort of skeptical.

I followed the official WP setup and it all goes perfectly, right up to logging in again after making all the changes, then it all goes south. Since I’m not doing subdomains (my host doesn’t support it, especially since my WP install isn’t in the root), I didn’t see anything new in your guide that I hadn’t done. Maybe I just need to completely wipe everything and start fresh again, kill the sub, delete the database, clear everything out, download a new version of WP3.01 and see if I can get it to work. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and let everyone know if I have any luck.

    Thanks.

Could be nonces and salt in the confgi file.

But, when we were testing this initially, everyone who had issues logging back in had to clear all the cookies and cache in their browsers. Quick test: try logging in afterwards with a different browser.

That did it, I got it set up successfully by logging on through IE, then clearing that cookie in Firefox. Thanks so much for all your help!

You know, if this is such a known problem, it’s funny that nobody puts this solution into the official WordPress walk-through for setting up multi-sites!

Hrm, I thought it was on that page… will fix.

I do know it’s mentioned in the codex *somewhere*. Generally speaking, they don’t try to put all the troubleshootings tips for every single step on the same page. It’d be twice as long.
