• Hi,

after upgrading to version 6.0 of The Event Calendar and migrating the data I got multiple reports that it is no longer possible to subscribe to the calendar (I promoted this only recently, so maybe it was failing with older versions already silently). I personally had no problems before version 6.0 except that the sync of the calendar entries needed up to 1 week.

If the Google Calendar is used it asks whether to add a calendar but immediately fails with something similar to ?calendar does no longer exist“ or ?calendar was removed“ showing it only for approximately 1s. I observed this myself a few times but now that I want to reproduce it (as I got a similar report from a second user) I cannot. It was working after multiple attempts so it could be a timing issue?

    Any ideas?

  • Hey @jensseidel

Sorry to hear about that. Yikes!

I am not seeing the issue on your site at the moment (I was able to subscribe to the calendar using the Google Calendar option).

Perhaps, it was a caching issue? Speaking of which are you using Redis Cache by any chance?

    Hang in there!

No, I am not using Redis Cache and I don’t know of any other cache.

I agree it is hard to analyze if it it not reproducable. I will report further problems here and others are invited to add their problems as well. Let’s see …

    Hi @jensseidel,

Yes, definitely keep us updated. I was able to successfully subscribe, as well, using the Google Calendar option.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you,
    Chad

It happened again: I ask a friend to subscribe and he could not (we tried twice). The error from Google calendar after pressing ok on the question, whether to subscribe resulted in: “The calendar does not exist anymore” (my own translation from German: “den Kalender gibt es nicht mehr”).

So not a single success story but a further error.

Is this calendar hosted on our site via webcal and provided by your plugins code? Or does it live on your server?

Maybe there exits tools to request the data independent of Google. I do not believe it is Googles fault, as far as I understand it it is only a wrapper?

I have more information from a further user.

He was asked on the selection of the subscribe button whether to open the link in the Google calendar app or in Chrome. Once he selected the calendar app the known error message occurred. But in Chrome it was working for him! We tested this twice (and unsubscribed after the first attempt) and got both times the same result.

So I conclude that the webcal calender is working well, what is not working is the Google interface. But seeing that you don‘t promote the webcal URL but provide only other stuff in the dropdown box I wonder what is not working.

The solution which could be working is to create an own Google calender and to associate it with the webcal adress or to use a different address such as

    https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0/r/settings/addcalendar?cid=webcal%3A%2F%2Fbrettspielhelden-dresden.de%2F%3Fpost_type%3Dtribe_events%26tribe-bar-date%3D2022-09-19%26ical%3D1%26eventDisplay%3Dlist

    instead of your created

    https://www.google.com/calendar/render?cid=webcal%3A%2F%2Fbrettspielhelden-dresden.de%2F%3Fpost_type%3Dtribe_events%26tribe-bar-date%3D2022-09-27%26ical%3D1%26eventDisplay%3Dlist

    Hello,

This appears to be a bug. Unfortunately, at this time I don’t have a timeline of when a fix will be released but our developers are aware of the issue.

    Thank you so much,
    Chad

Hi @jensseidel, we just released The Events Calendar 6.0.4. We fixed quite a few errors in this release, and it may have solved this issue as well. Please update and let us know if that fixes the issue here.

To be safe, we’d recommend conducting tests and updates on a Staging Server and keep a working backup of your website.

Also, please clear any caching for both third-party plugins and server-side (if you have any). It would also be good to flush permalinks.

    Best,
    Abz

    Hi @jensseidel,

We haven’t heard from you in a while, so I’m going to mark this as resolved. Feel free to start a new thread if you have any more questions.

The bug is still existing as before. Simple try to subscribe to the Google calendar from bottom of https://brettspielhelden-dresden.de/events/ ans see how it fails!

What makes you assume the bug does no longer exist? There is not even a similar entry in the changelog.

Hi @jensseidel, apologies for closing the ticket here, as it was not associated with a bug ticket. I found the bug ticket regarding this issue and added your case to it.

I can also confirm that this is already In Progress, and this is already on our Dev Team’s radar, as we’re also working on related issues regarding this.

    Hang in there,

Hi @jensseidel, writing back to you here. Could you provide the following version of the following?

    1. PHP
    2. WordPress
    3. The Events Calendar
    4. Theme and Version

Also, I am curious if the issue persists with the latest version of the plugin. Worth to test and seeing if that works on your end.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Best,
    Abz

I have a user that is having the same issue (Calendar no longer exists) on one of my websites area21aa.org. They are using a Pixel 5a running Android 13. They are trying to subscribe to our events calendar with the same error. I haven’t had any other feedback from other users regarding this issue. WP ver 6.1.1, PHP 8.026, Events Calendar ver 6.010, Theme Ascension 1.1.5. Thanks for any updates. Tim

    Hi @aaci11

    Thanks for your message.

As soon as we release a fix for this issue, we will post an update here in the thread.

Appreciate your patience so far. If you do have other concerns or issues you need help with, please create another support topic as indicated in the www.ads-software.com support guidelines.

This is still an issue, please resolve. Kind of a big deal that Android users can’t benefit from the service. Seems like something you’d prioritize solving.
