Recent post thumbnail, can I make the text overlay appear by hovering over it?

The recent posts on my blog appear as pictures thanks to the theme i’m using. However right now those pictures are covered by a text overlay which states the title of the post, categories etc.

Is there any way to change it so that in default, you can only see pictures and then you can see the title etc. if you hover over the picture?

I like having pictures as recent posts but having lots of text everywhere is a bit overwhelming on the homepage – looking for a way to hide the text until people hover..
