• Ok, all my categories just disappeared. Not even “Uncategorized” shows up as a listing, though the categories page on the dashboard has 2 blank pages of categories – encouraging me that they are still around somewhere.

My category index pages show up empty, there are no categories listed in any of the edit pages…

The only thing I can think of is that I recently changed the root directory of my blog on my server. I set the new directory in the settings page of the dashboard, and everything else is working fine (I don’t use tags, so I can’t say if that’s working or not).

I just upgraded to WordPress 3.0.1, but this problem appeared before the upgrade.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • did you find an answer to this? I am having a similar problem – I have added loads of categories but now can’t edit them or add any more as either nothing shows up except the number of pages of categories in the admin section or I can’t assign them to a paretn directory. i am also using 3.0.1.
I had some success working in another theme but the problem keeps coming back and it is driving me nuts

I haven’t been able to fix it, and the lack of response from this forum is rather unnerving..

I recieved this error today, have tried several solutions that worked for other users before but the problem persists. I am using the ComicPress theme and companion plugins, I have disabled everything, repaired the database, cleared my tmp folder, i have run a script that was on one of the threads, and even tried re-installing WordPress and all the themes to check if that was the problem, but it does not revert to the original categories. They simply vanished the moment i made a enw post this morning and since the, I have been trying like mad to get it back to the original state.

If anyone has found a sure fire solution to end this problem please post it here, it will be greatly appreciated.

btw, my website is https://www.zeldrak.net I am using a child theme over ComicPress and WP 3.0.1

Same thing has just happened to me. Also, I tried manually adding one of my categories that should exist and I got the message

A term with the name provided already exists with this parent.

Also, all of my tags associated with each post are no longer associated, although the tags themselves still exist. Strangely, all my posts still work OK.

Perhaps we have a common plugin that was recently updated and is causing trouble? One thing I noticed is that if I disable “My Category Order” plugin all my categories disappear on my blog homepage, but when it is activated all my categories appear, but clicking results in “Not Found”.

Ok, this is really strange. I was about to deactivate each plugin one by one and see if there was a problem with one of them.

I deactivated the very first one I have installed, “admin show sticky” and then my page suddenly worked perfectly. I then activated the plugin again, and the page works fine still.

I don’t understand it, but I’m happy again.

I solved my problem. The MYSQL tmp directory wasn’t writeable.

I’m running Ubuntu 9.04 and the tmp directory was listed in somewhere in /etc/mysql/my.cnf

As soon as I modified the permissions for the tmp directory my categories re-appeared.

I’ve got the exact same problem over at my blog:

    https://www.bjwok.com/

some times my categories are there, other times they are not. it’s extremely frustrating as the basis of my site is centered around those categories.

i’ve tried de activating all plugins – no luck.
i’ve tried re activating all plugins – no luck.

it seems very random that this will happen, yet it is random enough to be a complete pain and certainly something I want to fix ASAP.

    does anyone have any ideas?

i’ve noticed how many of these posts there are in these forums, surely there is a work around?

    frustrated!
