Password protecting WordPress media files

Hey there! I’m currently making a section on my website where people with a password can log in to view pdfs. The actual page is password protected, however, when you type in the link to directly access the WordPress file, anyone can access it. Is there a way to make this private or also password protect it? (I tried toggling the switch for passster on the file page but it turns off and does not update)
