For several months, I’ve put off switching. What do I need to know or do before deactivating “WooCommerce PayPal Checkout Gateway” and replacing with this plugin?

  • Nothing much, for us it was a smooth process. But we deff prefered the older version

    Hi @revived,

PayPal Payments works similar to the PayPal Checkout plugin, but can do a lot of new things the old plugin couldn’t.
Usually, there is not much to consider, as most things happen automatically.
PayPal Payments has a compatibility layer with the Checkout plugin and automatically takes over most of the configuration.
You only have to connect your PayPal account again to the new plugin because it uses a newer API that does not work with the old credentials.

There is an upgrade guide here: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/woocommerce-paypal-payments/paypal-payments-upgrade-guide/

And the plugin documentation with more details about the setup is here: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/woocommerce-paypal-payments/

In the vast majority of cases, setting up the plugin is a straightforward and smooth process, especially when using the onboarding wizard. But the team is here to help if any questions come up during the setup.

@blclda May I ask, do you mean you prefer the old PayPal Standard, or the PayPal Checkout plugin over PayPal Payments? Would you also mind telling us what makes you prefer an older integration?
Feedback or suggestions are always highly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Kind regards,
    Niklas

@niklasinpsyde Yo, it was easier since it was already integrated within Woocommerce and it wasn’t another plugin to update/resolve possible conflicts. I never had a problem with either, altough there was a time when this new plugin was loading on pages it shouldn’t have been loading and it slowed the site by a second, that was fixed on a subsequent version. That’s all.

Thanks for the feedback. The old PayPal Standard integration was quite limited in what it did, while PayPal Payments covers a wide range of the latest PayPal features.
In one version, a bug caused the scripts to load on all pages, but we provided an immediate workaround in the support.
So in case you encounter any issues, don’t hesitate to let us know, as the team is here to help.

But since we haven’t head back in a while, I’ll mark this as resolved. Feel free to reopen or create a new thread if any questions arise.
    Thanks!

    Kind regards,
    Niklas
