adding columns to a page

I am a complete beginner, as you will guess from the following…
I would like to add a column to a page. I am using the verysimpletxt theme. I have activatedthe WP Columnize plugin, but I don’t understand how I have to change the stylesheet.
Are there any plug-ins that would do this for me that would not require my doing any coding, or do all plug-ins require this.
Any advice would be gratefully recieved.
