Plugin confusion/qtranslate

I am about to evolve to multisite, but am scared due to some fails on a beta server when I was installing my plugins.
Is there a step by step process for plugins when changing to multisite with 3.01? I believe I got locked out of the whole blog when qtranslate asked what language I wanted default. Anyone with experience on Qtranslate and Multisite? Should I deactivate all plugins when I upgrade to multisite?

I want to make about 10-20 subsites.
Most will be default spanish, end users of these sites will be blogging in spanish, and I want access to their posts with qtranslate to translate them all. (might have to look for some volunteer translators hehe)
