I have WP Network setup completely functional using subdomains.

I am however struggling with how to properly domain map.

On MT the only DNS record I have created is for the primary domain of the network setup.

I have wildcards etc working, and sites working as subdomain.domain.com

Now, I want to map real domains to those sites.

I have the domain mapping plugin installed. I have read every tutorial and articles I could find, experimented and had no success. I would rather not have to create symlinks using SSH for each site if it could be avoided, as I have some non technical partners.

The first domain I want to map is parked at Godaddy.

If anybody has experience and could lead me through the steps at each end, MT and GoDaddy, I would be very appreciative.

If you are on MT, there is absolutely no way to avoid this. really.

I would be really interested in hosting recommendations…

    I can’t really give specific recommendations. ??

However, I *can* say that to set this up as easy an automated as possible, you’d need at least a VPS that you have shell access to. and you’d put in a named wildcard host to avoid the parking of each domain.

VPS with shell access – check – DV on MT to be specific.

I have wordpress setup in network mode – let’s call it networkdomain.com and that domain has a generic wildcard entry. (on a shared IP if that matters).

So what would the procedure be exactly? Where and how do I set up a named wildcard host? and then to map domains do I point an A record to the IP of this server?

Thanks for the help and patience – and perhaps if it was not a recommendation but a host that made this dead simple in your experience?

I’ve done this the most on cpanel hosts or dedicated boxes with whatever control panel (or none).

and then to map domains do I point an A record to the IP of this server?

    yep.

I actually found a method on mt that works easily – rather than dealing with the command line symlinks you can create domain aliases in Plesk.

Could you please elaborate? I have the exact same problem on mediatemple dv.

    To clarify:
-I have a primary multisite hosted on my mediatemple dv ‘siteA.com’
-I have a secondary site ‘siteB.com’ that I want to map to siteA.com

Here’s what I’ve accomplished so far:
-siteA.com is working, subdomains are working, I can create new blogs
-I’ve made a subdomain siteB.siteA.com, I have accessed the siteB subdomain backend, and mapped it to siteB.com as its primary domain

When I try to access siteB.com now I just get its httpdocs directory, not the siteB.siteA.com blog

My bad.. this actually wasn’t that hard. I initially tried to create an alias under siteB to siteB.siteA.com and I was confused.

The solution is to remove the domain from your hosting (in my case, I deleted siteB.com). After you do this, you are able to create an alias under siteA.com for siteB.com.

Note: if you’re like me and you were already hosting siteB.com on your mediatemple dv, then you’ll need to first remove siteB.com from your hosting – otherwise you won’t be allowed to create the alias under siteA.com.
