Tournaments with uneven number of players

When you have a tournament with an odd number of players in the first round one or more players will be given a “bye” into the next round from which the tournament will progress ‘normally’. I have found that if more that one player has a ‘bye’ into the next round you can’t use the term ‘bye’ more than once (I assume because player names have to be unique). to overcome this I have resorted to the word bye inside different bracket types. Is there a more elegant way of doing this?
