Cannot Install Updates

    For the past four days I have been trying to install recommended updates to WordPress 6.1.1. These include the latest version of WordPress, and ten plugin updates.

    Each time I click the update button I received an array of messages, including:

    ‘Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance. Check Back in a Minute’

    I contacted Hostgator but they were unable to assist me.

    I researched the problem and discovered that it may be something to do with maintenance mode.

    Unfortunately, my efforts to locate the problem file (.maintenance file) using filezilla have floundered. I can’t connect to my website. Instead, I keep getting the message:

    ‘Error: Critical error: Could not connect to server.’

    Hi there,

    That .maintenance file can be typically found in the site’s root folder. Meaning it can usually be found in the same folder the wp-config.php resides in. If you are using FileZilla, not sure if you have the “Force show hidden files” checked off but that is something I sometimes have to do.

    Are you running all plugin updates at once? If that’s the case that might be part of the reason as well. I’ve seen instances where doing a lot of updates can have it hang like that so I would do one at a time. Very time consuming but at least it got them updated.

    Thank you very much for replying so speedily.

    I’m afraid I was unable to connect to my site via Filezilla; I kept getting the message ‘Error: Critical error: Could not connect to server’.

    I managed to find the .maintenance file via cPanel (odd, as a search for the file yesterday returned no results). Deleting it enabled me to install the latest version of WordPress. Hooray!

    However, the problem recurs when I attempt to install any of the remaining 11 plug-in updates. That is, I receive the message ‘Update failed: -1’, and the .maintenance file returns.

    Deleting the .maintenance file, and trying to update each plug-in manually does not work.

    I managed to resolve the problems detailed above by:

    a) deleting the .maintenance file via my Hostgator cPanel file manager,

    b) deactivating all of my plug-ins,

    c) reinstalling each plug-in individually.

    Yeah, I definitely feel that pain of having to do those one at a time. It hurts. Deep. ??
