[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] Galleries suddenly not appearing after recent update to version 1.6.1

I recently updated my version of NextGen to 1.6.1 and now the galleries on my blog are not appearing anymore. In place of the galleries is an error message: Rendering of template gallery-caption2.php failed

Any idea about how to fix this? I re-uploaded the plugin files but that didn’t help.
