• In a “classic” WordPress theme, an ordinary blog shows the latest articles on the home page, with a link at the end of each article to the comments section of the individual post page (“x comments” or “x responses to [title]”). I’ve been trying to get that link to comments in a block theme, and I’m stumped. It must be simple, but no block theme I’ve tried does it by default. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • Install the Gutenberg plugin. With this comes a block called “Post Comments Count”. It does what you are looking for. Unfortunately, this block has not yet found its way into WordPress, so you have to install the Gutenberg plugin for it.

Thank you for a quick and very clear response.

I may be missing a setting in “Post Comments Count.” When I add the block, “Post Comments Count” displays a number, with no link. So, for example, if I put it at the bottom of the articles on the main page, a reader will come to the end of an article and see a tiny number 2. What does that mean? How would I, the reader, guess that that meant there were two comments, and what would I do if I had managed to guess?

I was able to get a better result by adding the “Comments” block, and then deleting every sub-block except “Comments Title.” Then at least I get something like “2 responses to ‘Post Title,’” although still with no link. But am I missing a setting in “Post Comments Count?”

No, you’re not missing anything there. If you want an addition to a block, you can report it to the Gutenberg team: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues
