Site vanished on upgrade – host blames WF

I have received this after my site disappeared during an upgrade.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should o next please?
I suspect the back-up includes the changed files.
ThanksWe have investigated the domain SonningWelfareTrust.org.uk and we could not find the exact problem with the website.
We suspect there may be PHP version incompatibilities with your WordPress installation/version and the PHP Version you are currently running. <br class=””>Also the error_log shows that there could be problems with Wordfence, and this could lead to certain permissions of core files being changed, thus harming the functionality of the website.
We’ve tried to insert an AddHandler in your .htaccess file to force different PHP versions, and the only one that did not seem to cause problems was 7.4. although the website was showing error 404.
We have also tried to raise the PHP Values limits, setting up a default index.php and .htaccess with no success, we have also disabled the plugins and themes, again, with no success.
This led us to believe that, again, the culprit could be Wordfence itself and its core files.
As it is a plugin, it is 3rd party and we cannot properly troubleshoot the exact issue (if it is indeed the cause of the HTTP 500 Error).
We would recommend that you contact your web developer or perhaps Wordfence to better troubleshoot this error.
Since you mention that the error appeared when you upgraded WordPress, the problem might reside in an incompatibility between WordPress itself and Wordfence, or other core files or plugins that may be incompatible.

Do you have ftp or other access that allows you to edit wp-config.php?

Yes I can edit that file thru cPanelThen Enable WordPress DEBUG to a LOG and after a while see the detailed error.
Add those to wp-config.php

I have done that. No file yet in wp-content but up one directory is an error log already

Ok, then two issues:
- Your wp-config.php at line 4 has something wrong. A typo, an extra character, something went wrong.
- Your index.php at line 3 has the same issue.
I would suggest to check and FIX the wp-config.php issue first.
What is at line 4 of your wp-config.php (do not post any sensitive info pls)

Before seeing the other logs, I would suggest that a change of server or other circumstances around your hosting could be linked to the
auto_prepend_filedirective in your .htaccess or .user.ini that is set during firewall optimization. This is a common reason of 500 errors after a major change as the path here may no longer point to the actual location of wordfence-waf.php so you could try clearing/deleting this line.However, as the logs seem to suggest a problem with wp-config.php and you were attempting a site cleaning, there may be something more fundamental about your WordPress or PHP installation missing. Before attempting a cleaning we always recommend taking a full backup of your site so it can be restored in the event of an issue.
As you suspect that your site has been compromized, carefully follow the checklist we provide for site admins to try cleaning their own sites in case anything can be done on the existing site, or a backup restore can be done beforehand: https://www.wordfence.com/docs/how-to-clean-a-hacked-wordpress-site-using-wordfence/

If you are unable to clean this on your own there are paid services that will do it for you. Wordfence offers one and there are others.

Peter.Thanks very much for the responses. I managed to fix it, having caused the problem in the first place by putting some code about debugging in the wrong place. It was all there in the error file. WF has sorted more issues.
