• This is my first new website in two years and everything is sooooo different and complex in the backend.

Starting with the header. I am trying to use “Pattern: Header with image background”

    1. the image I want to use is too big, but I can not find a way of making it smaller – or even what the required dimensions are for this “pattern.”
    2. I can not get the default pattern with the bird (white background) to show up on my website.
    3. I can not follow the video “Customizing a header with patterns” because it is different from what I see and not helpful at all.

Can I clear out the header and start from scratch? It used to be so simple to add a header image when it was Appearance:Customizer:Header Image.

    Thank you for any assistance.

Hi @clemrickbbb – I can definitely understand the confusion. There’s a bit of a learning curve – but it’s well worth it ??

That large image area with the bird on the Home page is something you can edit within the Site Editor (which edits templates and patterns).

Could you please try this out?

    • Go to Appearance > Editor in your admin menu (this opens the Site Editor).
    • You’ll see a preview of your homepage on the right of the Site Editor – and can click on it to start editing
    • If you click on the block with the bird image (it will be an Image block) you’ll see an option in the toolbar to replace that image.

Thank you, but I tried that and other things before writing.

I am very sad that WP is now a developer’s platform. I would not suggest it for a beginner or anyone like me who only does a new website every 2 or 3 years. It has become very complicated for those who don’t use it regularly.

I am lucky that I still have licenses for Genesis and Dynamik. A little old fashioned, but I was able to get my site up and running in a half-hour.

Hi @clemrickbbb – I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties you had – but glad to hear that those alternatives allowed you to do what you wanted.

I do totally understand the new editor takes some getting used to – and it’s often that the time when you’re trying to get something finished and released isn’t the best time to do that ??

Best of luck with the site – and I do hope you have a chance to spend some more time with Block themes and the new editor in the future.
