I notice many lengthy and convoluted responses to what should be straightforward inquiries. I’m simply looking for clear answers on whether existing WooCommerce subscriptions will persistently process after transitioning from PayPal Standard to the PayPal Payments plugin.

    Question #1:

If I switch from PayPal Standard to PayPal Payments for my WooCommerce website, what happens to my existing customer accounts with active PayPal Standard subscriptions that normally renew? Will disabling PayPal Standard result in PayPal Payments processing them on their scheduled renewal date?

    Question #2:

With PayPal Standard and the combination of IPN and WooCommerce Subscriptions, customer payments would automatically process on their billing anniversary date.

For new customers who sign up for a subscription (using the WooCommerce Subscriptions plugin) and choose PayPal Payments, what occurs on the “next payment date” recorded within WooCommerce for the customer’s account? Will PayPal Payments automatically handle the renewal without any action required from the customer?

    Hello @flowsheff,

Thank you for reaching out to us, we are here to help.

You should be able to disable the PayPal Standard gateway, but in order to keep the old subscriptions functioning, you should keep their API credentials configured.

The question is not really related to PayPal Payments because the PayPal Payments plugin doesn’t interact with the old PayPal Standard subscriptions at all. If you only deactivate the payment method and leave the configuration, it should be able to continue renewing the old subscriptions and have new subscriptions being sold and paid via our PayPal Payments payment method.

The simple answer is: The PayPal Payments plugin does not get affected by what is done with the PayPal Standard integration.?They should be configured correctly individually.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    Kind regards,
    Joost

It sounds like the simpler answer would be: NO, PayPal Payments doesn’t process existing subscriptions. If you wish for older WooCommerce payments to continue processing using PayPal Standard, then you’ll need to leave PayPal Standard activated but remove it from the checkout process after you begin using PayPal Payments

    Did I get that right?

    Hello @flowsheff

yes, that is correct. The difference between the 2 plugins in the way subscriptions work is completely different. The Standard PayPal paid for subscriptions are completely handled and renewed on the PayPal server. The only thing that is communicated to WooCommerce is the fact if the renewal was performed.
With our plugin, the renewal is triggered from WooCommerce to PayPal and then the confirmation of the renewal is sent back to WooCommerce. This is why our plugin can’t take over a subscription that was paid for by Standard PayPal, because it is a completely different setup and would never work.

Our plugin can take over subscriptions that were paid for with the Express Checkout plugin, because that plugin handles subscriptions similarly like our plugin. You can read more on this in this document under “WooCommerce?PayPal Checkout gateway migration layer”.

But yes, short answer: No, our plugin cannot take over the subscriptions that were initially paid for by PayPal Standard. These subscriptions can continue to get renewed, while you have our payment method activated and deactivate the PayPal Standard Payment method.

Hopefully this is clearer and answers your question. Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Kind regards,
    Joost
