I work on a bunch of different sites and many have an Astra child theme. Something that i’ve noticed is that if (on ANY site that i’ve worked on) i want to create a page NOT using Elementor, i would expect that Gutenberg would be the default editor but i get the legacy block editor instead. Time and again, i have been confronted with the legacy block editor and i cannot seem to figure out how to change to the Gutenberg editor.

I’ve watched numerous videos about how to start a site with the Astra theme and often it is recommended to use Starter Templates, with the idea being that you select ‘Gutenberg’ from the template options and you are then presented with a series of Gutenberg-friendly templates.

For me, it does not work like that. I go into Starter Templates, and in the top right corner, my options are: Block Editor, Elementor and Beaver Builder. In all the videos that i’ve watched, it does NOT show Block Builder, but rather ‘Gutenberg’. I think this is a symptom of the problem.

How do i activate the Gutenberg editor in Astra? I’m using the free version and the latest WP version 6.4.1. As i understand it, Gutenberg should be ‘standard’, i.e. i shouldn’t have to enable it. I do not have any Gutenberg-specific plugins installed that might conflict.

p.s. I would embed an image of what i see in Starter Templates in the top right corner, but i can’t seem to attach an image to this post via a URL that would take you to the file on my Google drive.

But, if you go into Starter Templates and go to the top right corner, you get a list of template types, and ‘Gutenberg’ is NOT one of my options. “Block Editor” is. My theory is that somehow/somewhere there’s a setting that i don’t know about. I’ve only seen this with the Astra theme though in any of the modern sites that i’ve worked on recently.

    Hi @jlanpheer,

Astra doesn’t “force” to use a Classic Editor over the Block Editor. Unless you have plugin that make the Classic Editor as the default page editor, then the default editor will be the Block Editor.

In all the videos that I’ve watched, it does NOT show Block Builder, but rather ‘Gutenberg’. I think this is a symptom of the problem.

In the old version of Starter Templates plugin, it was called Gutenberg and now is called Block Editor as it is, that’s what the default WordPress page editor is now called. However, it’s just the matter of terminology and it doesn’t affect any functionalities.

I can’t seem to attach an image to this post via a URL that would take you to the file on my Google drive.

You should have no problem sharing a link to an image uploaded to a service like Google Drive, Dropbox, Imgur, etc.

    I hope it will help.

    Kind regards,
    Herman ??

Thank you for your reply Herman, much appreciated. I wasn’t aware of the change in terminology. However, i’m pretty sure that i’m looking at the ‘classic’ editor. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nmGzI6WHadzpBGKkevQ9NenhX1Xkzbee/view?usp=sharing

This is my default editor when i create a page:

    Hi @jlanpheer,

The first screenshot is showing the right thing. And for the second one, yes, it is the Classic Editor. Not sure why you have it as the default editor instead of the Block Editor.

Could you please list down here the plugin you have on your site? In the meantime, to check whether this is theme-related or not, ?please try temporarily switch the theme to a default WordPress theme. If you still have the Classic Editor as the default editor, then this has nothing to do with the theme.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,
    Herman ??
