We discovered last week that the subscription widget had stopped accepting new subscriptions. When I enter a new email address, I receive this error message: “Oops! There was an error when subscribing. Please try again.” The widget does recognize existing subscriber emails when I enter an email address that is already subscribed.

We tried updating to the latest version of Jetpack, but that seemed to worsen the problem. When a new email was entered the page refreshed, and a # was added to the end of the URL.

    We are running:

    PHP version: 7.4
    WordPress version: 6.4.1
    Jetpack Version: 12.7.1

  • I have exactly the same problem since a few days ago – I’m reassured that I’m not the only one! Hopefully there will be a fix soon…

@angusnewton Our stakeholder asked that we remove the widget from the blog until it’s fixed. Please let me know if this gets fixed on your site.

    Thanks!

U can easyly downgrade Jetpack plugin (NOT recommended for security reasons)
Download old version from here: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/jetpack/advanced/ from the botoom of the page
    12.08 works fine for me
    Hope soon to be fix!

Good idea @ashopov – I gave it a shot and had to downgrade to 12.7.1 for it to work. Hopefully they fix it soon

Hi @nahbweb, @angusnewton, @ashopov, @staffwithoutborders, thanks for the feedback. The issue was fixed and released in Jetpack 12.9.

@eri32s98 I updated Jetpack and added the widget back to my site. It still does not work. It is repeating the same behavior as before.

When I enter a new email address, I receive this error message: “Oops! There was an error when subscribing. Please try again.” The widget does recognize existing subscriber emails when I enter an email address that is already subscribed.

Can you help me figure out what is wrong?

    Thank you.

Hi @nahbweb, sorry to hear the issue is still happening. I check edthe Jetpack connection to your site, it’s currently broken, could you try disconnecting, then reconnecting Jetpack?

    (@nahbweb)

Hi @eri32s98, I disconnected and reconnected but that didn’t fix the issue. I ran the jetpack debug tool and it said everything was running fine.

Are you seeing any issues with my site on your end?

Hi @nahbweb, looking at the browser console error (see guide), there might be a conflict with googletagmanager. Could you test turning off any plugins or code related to it, then test the subscription widget?

    Hey @nahbweb,

Do you have updates about that? We usually close inactive threads after one week of no movement, but we want to make sure we’re all set before marking it as solved. Thanks!

@erania-pinnera Thank you for checking in. This issue is still not resolved. I’ve deactivated all plugins and the subscription widget continues to generate an error message. Could this issue be related to our Theme?

I updated jetpack today to 12.9.1

    Hi there @nahbweb,

I understand that you add the subscription form as w classic widget, right? I have just tested the setup with Classic Editor + Classic Widgets and the subscription form added both as a shortcode:

[jetpack_subscription_form title="LET ME KNOW ABOUT NEW POSTS ??" subscribe_text="Enter your email address to subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email." subscribe_button="Subscribe" show_subscribers_total="1"]

or the Blog Subscriptions (Jetpack) widget. I tested with the latests 12.9.3 version of Jetpack as well as 12.9.1. Both worked fine.

At this point, I do not see any connection problems on your site. You also mentioned that you deactivated all plugins except Jetpack and the issue persists, right?

In that case, please try to temporarily switch your theme to Twenty Twenty-One and test again.

If you still get the message: “Oops! There was an error when subscribing. Please try again.”?– could you check your browser’s console for any errors. If you see some, please share here. ?Here is?a guide on using your browser to diagnose JavaScript errors in case you?need it.

    Thank you!
