Manually change user-nicename

    I want to change the author slug for a user but prefer not to use a plugin for this purpose. Can I simply use phpmyadmin to manually change the user-nicename for this user? All we’re trying to do is prevent exposing this user’s login, which unfortunately WP uses as the user-nicename and therefore part of the author slug. Will WP automatically change the user-nicename back to match the login? Will this change cause some other disturbance in the universe?
