I had some malware on my server, and there was a large number of instances on files in the wp-includes folder. So I deleted the whole folder and uploaded a clean version. Now, I’m getting ‘There has been a critical error on this website’.

    I’ve dealt with this before, but it’s usually me forgetting a , ; } ] ) somewhere in a function.

At that point, I can’t access the dashboard to deactivate plugins, so I renamed the plugin folder. Still getting the error.

Should I reinstall the other non wp-content files as a start to troubleshooting this mess? (Actually thought of that while asking here for help) I suppose it’s possible I wasn’t completely up to date on my WP installation, so now I have mismatched files.

    Any other ideas of troubleshooting?

Never mind. Mismatched files was the issue.

Glad you were able to solve it. However, as a note: take a look at… hacked websites, check out this article: https://www.ads-software.com/documentation/article/faq-my-site-was-hacked/

I would also recommend being careful with further work on the project. You can never rule out that you have actually found the entire hack. My recommendation would actually be to delete everything and re-import from a backup.

However, if you think it’s done for you, you can also set the topic to solved.

My host did a server scan, and I did effectively replace all files not in wp-content folder. In the wp-content folder, the malware was inserted files vs. inserted code since those files aren’t predictable.

    I’ve also changed my password.

The pattern of what it’s doing is kind of obvious now, and if nothing else, I can monitor when there is activity with the files going forward.

Read the article, and I think I’ve done all of that.
