It’ s really great to see correct macrons over vowels in reo Māori place names, however it’s incompatible with NZ Post’s eShip service and results in eShip showing an “Invalid address”. Manually replacing the macron vowel with a plain text vowel fixed the invalid address issue

    e.g.

Whangārei results in “Invalid address”. Replacing the “ā” with with a plain “a”, Whangarei, works.

Is there any way for the Address Finder plugin to only output plain text, at least until NZ Post starts spelling place names correctly?

    Thanks!

    Hi Rose,

Thank you for getting in touch with us.

We are aware that not all of our customers are able to consume macrons and in order to support their needs we have a filter which, when included in API calls, will tell our system to return ASCII characters in place of those macron containing characters. (eg, ō = O, ā = a etc). Note, the filter does not exclude macron containing addresses from the results but translates the macron characters within these addresses into the ASCII format.

The filter is ascii=1 and it can be included on any of our APIs (address autocomplete, address metadata, address verification etc). For example: https://api.addressfinder.io/api/nz/address/autocomplete/?key=xxxx&secret=yyyyy&q=184%20will&format=json&ascii=1&strict=2

It can also be included in our widget code so that only ASCII characters are returned there also. An example of the ASCII related changes can be seen in lines 7 and 8 of the JS box in this code example – https://codepen.io/addressfinder/pen/RzboxW.

If you have any further trouble please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Kind regards,
