Updating users

I am seriously considering implementing your plug-in and will not hesitate to pay for it, should it suit our needs. I need to understand how I can update a user. Right now, if the import procedure encounters a username that already exists, it halts the procedure. I will need to be able to update other fields for an existing user and need to know if that is possible, and if so, how. Many thanks.
