• My site is showing the white screen of death. I cannot log in through wp-login.php or wp-admin, both return the “error establishing connection” message. I have been told this usually a plugin issue that can be resolved by turning off the plugin that is causing the problem. I cannot turn off the plugins if I cannot log in. I have tried to log into my site using FTP but the login credentials must be different than the ones I used to access the dashboard as they do not work on the FTP client. I am using a droplet on digital ocean to host the affected site as well as another site that is currently still functioning normally. I would like to avoid wiping the droplet and wiping out the functioning site if possible. I do not care if I lose the affected site and have to start over. I am not a developer by profession (is it obvious?). Just a family business owner that wanted to try creating my own site for the business. I would love to know if anyone else has any clever ideas on how to get back to my dashboard, or a workaround for this problem if there is one. Thank you

  • Hi, do not panic.
The credentials for the FTP access should be found easily in the Digital Ocean dashboard.
Once there, go to public-html/yoursite/wp-content/ and rename the folder “plugins” to something like “plugins_OLD”. This way you are deactivating all plugins at once.

Try to access via the normal login page “yoursite.com/wp-admin”. If you can access, then start activating plugins one by one to see which ones originates the problem.

Thank you Carlos. Unfortunately DigitalOcean does not allow FTP on their Droplets. I am looking into logging into the Droplet via SSH but am hitting more roadblocks. It will not allow me to add an SSH key to an existing droplet. The only way it says I can add an SSH key to an existing droplet is through SSH. You can see the problem. I have tried logging in with the username and password. DigitalOcean tells me to set the username to root, which I did. My password does not work. I have reset the password for the droplet and tried the new password as well. It tells me access is denied. I don’t know where else to turn. I am about to erase the droplet and start over. Thank you for your help

I see. I never used Digital Ocean but I’d bet that sort of service include really good customer support. Is there a back up you can roll back after you erase the droplet and start over?
If not, can’t they guide you to make a back up via SSH to google drive?

    Hi @jproach,

Try to read this article on how to connect to FileZilla so that you can access your files.

    https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/droplets/how-to/transfer-files/#configure-filezilla

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks.
